Backup & Restore
Backup & Restore
A backup only counts once the restore has been tested. Backups are treated as an ongoing process here – not as a cron job set up once and forgotten.
Proxmox Backup Server
- Deployment of a dedicated Proxmox Backup Server as the central backup target
- Incremental, deduplicated, and compressed backups of VMs and containers
- Client-side encryption of backups, before transfer
- Retention policies following the grandfather-father-son scheme (hourly/daily/weekly/ monthly/yearly)
- Backup integrity verification through regular, automated check runs
Restore
- Restoring individual files without a full VM restore (file-level restore)
- Regular restore testing as a fixed part of the backup concept, not an afterthought
- Offsite replication to a second location or external storage, to protect against total loss
Setup
Gathering retention periods and recovery objectives (RPO/RTO), sizing and selecting backup storage, and setting up the backup schedule – with a documented, tested restore procedure.
